Kandy Esala Perahera Festival 2026
Cultural
Witness one of Asia’s oldest, grandest, and most visually stunning cultural pageants, an unbroken tradition honouring the Sacred Tooth Relic of Lord Buddha for over 2,000 years. For ten magical nights, the historic hill capital of Kandy transforms into a dazzling open-air theatre under the stars. The parade features hundreds of traditional Kandyan dancers in gleaming silver breastplates, rhythmic low-country drummers, energetic whip-crackers, fire-twirlers, and over 70 magnificently caparisoned elephants. The spiritual crown jewel of the festival is the majestic Maligawa Tusker, who walks atop a white cloth pathway carrying the sacred golden casket beneath an illuminated canopy. Merging the rituals of the Temple of the Tooth with the ancient shrines of guardian deities, this vibrant festival is an unmissable, world-famous celebration of Sri Lankan heritage and divine devotion.
