Pekoe Trail Stage 4 – Thawalanthenna to Pundaluoya

Walk through the heart of Sri Lanka’s tea country on Stage 4 of the Pekoe Trail, a spectacular highland journey from Tawalantenne to Pundalu Oya.

This challenging walking route takes travellers beyond Sri Lanka’s familiar tourist stops and into rural villages, paddy fields, tea estates, mountain paths and landscapes overlooking the Kotmale Reservoir. Along the journey, hikers cross Ramboda Oya, encounter traditional communities, climb through tea-growing country and discover viewpoints, waterfalls and traces of the region’s fascinating cultural and colonial history.

The surrounding Kotmale region is also closely connected with Sri Lankan history and local legends, while old roads, tea-estate landscapes and remote villages reveal another side of the island’s Central Highlands.

For international travellers who enjoy slow travel, hiking and authentic local encounters, Stage 4 provides one of the best ways to experience Sri Lanka’s hill country on foot rather than through the window of a vehicle.
