Barefoot Gallery Present "Interstices" – Solo Exhibition by Karunasiri Wijesinghe

Discover the extraordinary forms hidden within Sri Lanka’s natural landscapes at Interstices, a solo exhibition by acclaimed Sri Lankan artist Karunasiri Wijesinghe at Barefoot Gallery Colombo.

For more than four decades, Wijesinghe has closely observed Sri Lanka’s forests, trees, vines, roots and untamed ecosystems, transforming their complex organic structures into detailed visual studies where nature gradually shifts towards abstraction.

Look closely and roots and branches begin to suggest human and animal forms, rhythm, movement and hidden presences. Rather than presenting broad landscapes, the artist isolates selected fragments of nature, allowing viewers to notice details that might otherwise disappear within the apparent complexity of a forest.

His long-standing artistic practice has included extensive engagement with Sri Lanka’s tropical ecosystems, including time spent studying environments such as Sinharaja, mangrove landscapes and other forest regions. Previous Barefoot presentations of his work have similarly explored the aesthetic and spiritual qualities of Sri Lanka’s natural environment.

For international visitors, Interstices offers an opportunity to experience Sri Lanka’s biodiversity through the eyes of a local contemporary artist—making it an excellent cultural complement to visits to the island’s forests, parks and wildlife destinations.

Barefoot itself has been an important Colombo arts platform for decades, hosting Sri Lankan and international artists as well as exhibitions, film, music, poetry and theatre.
